 UPG is an independent 501(c)(3) University Associated Organization (UAO), and is governed by its own Board of Directors with a public majority. As a separate employer, UPG offers a separate benefits package from UVA and the Medical Center and maintains separate benefit and leave policies.

 UVA Health’s community hospitals and many provider offices and outpatient clinics are located in the areas surrounding Culpeper, Fauquier and Prince William counties. New hires for these locations are hired by the UVA Health subsidiary UVA Community Health, a non-profit 501(c)(3) that is not state-funded.
